I’m From NYC where we have unlimited access to all the best cuisines from each corner of the world at all distinct price ranges
So when I came to Winston Salem for the weekend I did not have high hopes for the food
But I was happily mistaken. The food scene here is much better than I would’ve ever thought.
Highlights:
Milners – omg first time having a southern cuisine and it was fucking amazing. That POTROAST holy shit I’m still craving it
Mozelles- it wasn’t earth shattering like Milners but it was so good. I got the classic fried chicken and it was cooked to perfection and the peach chutney that came with it was exquisite
Don Express – very very surprised there was good Japanese here. That chicken katsu curry was as good as any I would get in NYC for that price range
Cha Da Thai – again, very very surprised there was good Thai here. I got the pad Thai and the prik something (I forgot) and it was amazing. Easily could be a Thai place you find in Queens NY (iykyk)
Real Q – first time having Carolina BBQ and it lived up to the hype and more. The chopped meat, the sauce, the hush puppies omg wish we had this in NYC
Lowlights:
West End Cafe – to classify it as a lowlight is a little harsh. Food was fine just nothing crazy as Reddit hyped it up to be. Got the shrimp po boy cause it was recommended by the server and it was decent.
New Sichuan – so this was claimed as the best Asian/Chinese spot in Winston Salem. A lot of hype around it, saw a Reddit post saying it should be a Michelin Star (lol) and this is the one that let me down the most. Not really true Sichuan food, more salty than spicy/numbing. I got their signature Dan Dan noodles and it was one of the worst Dan Dan noodles I’ve had. The tri pepper chicken and dry pot chicken was alright but too salty. It definitely did not live up to the hype around all, it wasn’t the worst but there’s a gazillion places in Flushing NY alone (iykyk) that would actually highlight real authentic and good Sichuan food if you guys ever visit NYC.
Overall, had a great time, good food and southern hospitality is a real thing over here
