Today we’d like to introduce you to Keera Brabham.
Hi Keera, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself. Since a child, I was interested in skincare. Around 8 or 9, I used to mask my face with Noxzema. I wasn’t allowed to wear makeup until I turned 18. The day I turned 18 out came the mascara, eyeliners, and eyeshadows. I started my business out of my dorm room in Tallahassee. At first, I only offered strip and cluster lashes. You know, the one’s that you can buy from the hair store. I also offered brow tinting and arching services as well. Makeup came along down the line as I got more comfortable. I didn’t want to ask my parents for any money so I figured I’d hustle for it. The Shade Thrower was my first business name. I got the idea from a friend who stated that I was throwing shade on the client’s brows. It was catchy so I kept it. I graduated with my associate’s degree and moved back to Vero to start my business there. My parents flipped their den into my personal beauty room and I had that place jumping! It got to the point where my mom couldn’t park in the yard anymore. She told me it was my time to move my business and even helped me find the first salon I worked in. It grew and in 2017, I learned how to do mink lash extensions.
In 2018, I decided to go a little farther and get my Esthetician license. My mother is a skin cancer survivor so learning more about skin and how to protect it was right up my alley. I feel like people of color are not taught how to take off their skin. I wanted to be that person to educate everyone. I then changed my name to Shaded Aesthetics in 2019. I had to change it to fit my business’s description. My clientele is a mix of genders and ethnicities. Essentially, I deal with all shades of people. In 2020 I decided to move down south to Plantation and open up an office there. Honestly, it was the best decision of my life. In May of 2021, I graduated with my Bachelor’s in Organizational Management. That degree has taught me how to run my business as properly as possible. My clientele has expanded beyond my wildest dreams and has connected me to so many people. I love South Florida and am glad that I officially made it my home and place of business!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect? It has not been a smooth road at all! The first shop I worked at in Vero had an owner who moved someone into my workspace without telling me. She then proceeded to tell me which days I could and couldn’t come to work. In my room. With my products! In the back of my head, I was thinking “I’m a boss, how can you dictate my work schedule?” I moved my business back into my parent’s home until I found the next salon to work out of.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business? Shaded Aesthetics is a brand that is for anyone of various ethnicities and gender. I believe all people should feel confident about their appearance and it makes me feel great when I can help them to do so. I am a licensed esthetician specializing in facials, lash extensions, body waxing and makeup. I also teach classes to other cosmetology students. What sets me apart from others is my customer service. It’s my pet peeve! On google ads, Facebook and Groupon I have received five stars and my customer service is the main thing that keeps clients coming back. I want the readers to know that it’s not about the money for me. It’s about helping others by uplifting their spirits while enhancing their appearance. My office is a safe space for anyone to relax and enjoy the many services that I offer.
What makes you happy? There are a few things that make me happy. The fact that my business survived a pandemic and flourished is one of them. I also love how I can have control of my schedule being that I am my own boss. If I wanted to take a day off and lay in the bed with my son to watch Sesame Street all day, I can do just that! It’s truly a warming feeling.
